The History of Men’s Wedding Bands

Wedding bands are a symbol of love, unity, and partnership between married couples. It signifies to the world that two lovers are committed to one another and have exchanged sacred vows to each other. The couples spend lots of time selecting wedding bands for their wedding. It has become a tradition. Men have adorned their wives with wedding bands for thousands and thousands of years. However, the issue of men’s wedding bands is a different story.

It is just recently that men’s wedding bands have become a part of the wedding tradition. Before this time, most men felt that any sort of jewelry was not manly. Jewelry was for females and that was that. If men wore wedding bands, it was clearly a matter of choice. Women were obliged to wear their wedding bands to signify that they were, in fact, married. In some cultures women were considered their husbands property and their wedding bands were the legal tender for “purchase” of the bride. It is clear to see why men considered wedding bands to be feminine. With this type of stigma attached to a wedding band, they chose not to don one. Only those men who were truly passionate about expressing love for their wives wore wedding bands.

Men’s wedding bands rose in popularity during the Second World War. Thousands of married men were shipped off to battle. They knew that it could be months before they would ever see their wives. They then chose to wear wedding bands to remind them of their lovers while they were so far away. It is said that men would often look at their wedding bands in remembrance of their wives during hard war times. After this period in history, men became more accepting of men’s wedding bands.

The status of men’s wedding bands is quite the opposite of its past status. Now, the majority of married men wear wedding bands. In fact, completely different factors determine if a man will wear a wedding band. For example, certain professions forbid wearing wedding rings because it’s dangerous or it hinders the work. Police officers, actors, and electricians are all dissuaded from donning wedding bands for various reasons. Some construction workers do not wear men’s wedding bands, because the work that they do could severely damage the wedding band.

Any man who does choose to wear men’s wedding bands must consider a few things. First, he must choose a band that is proportionate to the size of his hands. If a man has larger hands, he will likely choose a wider band and greater band thickness. The opposite is true of men with smaller hands. Next, he must choose a men’s wedding band design based on his personal style. He may like a simple band with no design or he may want intricate details and engraving. The last thing to consider is the metal. He may choose from gold, platinum, titanium, and white gold. Each metal has its own individual properties, style and benefits. For example, some metals are light-weight, some are hypo-allergenic, and some are less expensive than others.
